MJA–Lancet Countdown Collection

For nearly a decade, the MJA–Lancet Countdown on health and climate change has provided a rigorous annual assessment of how climate change is affecting health in Australia and the broader Oceania region. Together, these articles trace a clear and escalating narrative: from policy inaction and growing climate-related health risks, through the devastating lessons of the 2019–20 Black Summer bushfires, to mounting pressures on the health system, increasing legal and societal responses, and the disproportionate impact on children and future generations. This collection of articles from a distinguished group of international experts highlights both the human and economic costs of delayed action while tracking progress across mitigation, adaptation and health system sustainability. Taken together, the Countdown reports offer an essential evidence base for policymakers, clinicians and public health leaders, documenting how climate change has become one of the defining health challenges of our time and underscoring the urgent need for coordinated action to protect current and future generations.
