Understanding the mouth, nose and throat
Author: Michael Barakate
Published online: 6 August 2012

PATIENTS COMMONLY have problems in the mouth, nose and throat. This new book by Geoffrey Quail, who is Clinical Associate Professor at the Department of Surgery, Monash University, Melbourne, and Director of the Dental and Maxillofacial Surgery Unit at Southern Health, Melbourne, provides clear and succinct information on the diagnosis of conditions affecting these areas.
It will be helpful to anyone who needs an illustrated and practical guide. Family practitioners, emergency department doctors and nurses, plastic surgeons, ear, nose and throat surgeons, dentists and maxillofacial surgeons, allied health workers and medical students are likely to find this book useful.
The layout of the book is clear and well organised. The aetiology of symptoms is explained and the key features for clinical presentation, examination and management are provided for each symptom and the underlying cause.
Important clinical points of caution are included for each clinical presentation. Recommended investigations and treatment steps are outlined for each condition. The book is also well referenced for those seeking a deeper understanding of the subject. In particular, the clinical photographs included are excellent and will greatly assist practitioners in the diagnosis of common mouth, nose and throat conditions.
After reading this book, it is clear that the author is a very experienced practitioner. I recommend this clear and practical guide to those seeking a book to assist them with the diagnosis and management of problems in these areas.
