The essential practice of mental health care

All doctors have to practise mental health care as part of their general responsibility for the wellbeing of their patients.
Mental disorders are common. Each year, almost one in five Australians meet diagnostic criteria for a mental health disorder (either briefly or chronically).
Most are not treated. Of those who are, 75%-90% are treated by general practitioners, not psychiatrists.
The most common disorders are anxiety, major depression, and alcohol abuse/dependence.
The prognosis of anxiety disorders, major depression and psychoses is improved by early detection and intervention.
