| The essential practice of mental health care
| All doctors have to practise mental health care as part of their general responsibility for the wellbeing of their patients.
| | | Mental disorders are common. Each year, almost one in five Australians meet diagnostic criteria for a mental health disorder (either briefly or chronically).
| | | Most are not treated. Of those who are, 75%-90% are treated by general practitioners, not psychiatrists.
| | | The most common disorders are anxiety, major depression, and alcohol abuse/dependence.
| | The prognosis of anxiety disorders, major depression and psychoses is improved by early detection and intervention.
