The role of the general practitioner

GPs are well placed to provide responsive, cost-effective and discreet treatment to patients with psychoses. They can help engage the patient in active management of their psychosis.
GPs can simultaneously give expert attention to physical illness, which is often more common in people with a psychosis.
GPs can provide support and counselling to the families of people with a psychosis.
Collaborative care between GPs and psychiatric services is often required. See short course 2 for more on collaborative care.
