Assessment

Patients thought to be suffering a first episode of psychotic illness need a detailed psychiatric and physical (especially neurological) examination.
 Consider the possibility of medically related (see 9.4) or substance-induced psychotic disorders. These are rare causes of psychosis, but they require quite different treatment.
 Appropriate medical investigations are listed in 9.5.
 Prodromal symptoms are described in 9.6.
Delays in the detection and treatment of first episode psychoses are associated with slower and less complete recoveries.
