| Patients thought to be suffering a first episode of psychotic illness need a detailed psychiatric and physical (especially neurological) examination. |
| | Consider the possibility of medically related (see 9.4) or substance-induced psychotic disorders. These are rare causes of psychosis, but they require quite different treatment.

| | Appropriate medical investigations are listed in 9.5.

| | Prodromal symptoms are described in 9.6.

| Delays in the detection and treatment of first episode psychoses are associated with slower and less complete recoveries.
