Cognitive strategies for stress management

The objective is to help patients recognise their pattern of response to stress. With this insight, patients can develop coping strategies.

Problem-solving
  • Identify the stressors.
  • Classify them (is this an important stressor or a minor "hassle"?) and reframe concerns.
  • Identify events that are within personal control and acknowledge the existence of stresses that are beyond control.
  • Break down high priority stressors into manageable components.

Positive approaches
  • Encourage the person to challenge their negative thoughts and to consider how they could reframe things to deal with problems positively.
