Managing stress

A range of techniques must be tailored to the unique needs of each individual.
Counselling takes time: discuss the need for follow-up appointments.
Patient education: a good starting point is to ensure that the patient recognises that stress is a problem, that it can cause physical and psychological symptoms, and that such reactions are common and not demonstrations of personal failure. From this base, various strategies for coping with stress can be taught (see 7.4 to 7.6)
Agree on a treatment plan. This will reassure the patient, but it is equally important that the plan encourages the patient to "own the problems" and set goals for treatment.
