Benzodiazepines

Generalised anxiety disorder

Excessive anxiety or worry, occurring on most days for more than 6 months, with symptoms of motor tension, autonomic hyperactivity, apprehensive expectation, vigilance and scanning.
Treat with
  1. Support (guidance, advice, development of coping strategies.
  2. Counselling
  3. Relaxation therapy
  4. Stress management (relaxation, meditation)
  5. Cognitive-behaviour therapy
Drug treatments
  1. Buspirone
  2. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors
  3. Tricyclic antidepressants
  4. Benzodiazepines
  5. Beta-blockers
Use psychological therapies alone, or begin psychological therapies at the same time as drug treatment with the aim of using these alone when drug treatment stops.
