| Generalised anxiety
disorder
| Excessive
anxiety or worry, occurring on most days for more than 6
months, with symptoms of motor tension, autonomic
hyperactivity, apprehensive expectation, vigilance and
scanning. |
| Treat with | - Support (guidance, advice,
development of coping strategies.
- Counselling
- Relaxation therapy
- Stress management (relaxation, meditation)
- Cognitive-behaviour therapy

| Drug treatments |
- Buspirone
- Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors
- Tricyclic antidepressants
- Benzodiazepines
- Beta-blockers
|
| Use psychological therapies alone, or begin psychological therapies at the same time as drug treatment with the aim of using these alone when drug treatment stops.
