Common child and adolescent psychiatric problems and their management in the community
About 7% to 10% of young people are affected by psychiatric problems at some time.
 Disturbed or antisocial behaviour - 3%-5%. More common in boys than girls.
 Troubled emotions and feelings - 2%-5%. Depression and anorexia more common in girls.
 Psychological problems mixed with physical illness - somatoform disorders - 1%-3%.
 Psychosis and pervasive developmental disorders (autism spectrum) are relatively rare - about 0.1%.
 Intellectual and chronic physical disabilities increase the risk of developing emotional and behavioural problems.
Solving the psychological problems of children is often a matter of family medicine.
