| Drugs of dependence and misuse
Central nervous system depressants: Alcohol and most other anxiolytic and
sedative-hypnotic drugs (i.e., barbiturates, benzodiazepines,
meprobamate, methaqualone, glutethamide)
(Can produce physical dependence and tolerance).
Central nervous system stimulants: Cocaine,
amphetamine, methamphetamine, dexamphetamine, methylphenidate,
cathinone (khat), nicotine, caffeine, some anorectics (e.g.,
mazindol).
(Can produce physical dependence and tolerance).
Opioid (narcotic) analgesics: Heroin
(diacetylmorphine), all painkillers other than those that are
specifically anti-inflammatory (e.g., dextropropoxyphene,
codeine, oxycodone, dextromoramide, buprenorphine, morphine,
pethidine, methadone and fentanyl), some antitussives (e.g.,
hydrocodone, pholcodine), some antidiarrhoeal agents (e.g.,
diphenoxylate)
(Can produce physical dependence and tolerance).
Cannabinoids: Marijuana, hashish
Solvents: toluene, paint thinners, petrol,
methanol, alcohol
(Alcohol, while acting as a
central nervous system depressant, produces most of its toxicity
because it is a solvent).
Psychedelics: LSD, mescaline, psilocybin,
psilocin, dimethyltryptamine (DMT), dimethoxymethylamphetamine
(DOM, or "STP")
"Designer" drugs: Dimethoxyamphetamine (DMA),
phencyclidine (PCP, or "angel dust"),
methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, or "ecstasy")
(These have both psychedelic and
stimulant effects - i.e., they are both LSD-like and
amphetamine-like).
Others: Antihistamines, anticholinergics, amyl
nitrite, nitrous oxide, ethyl ether, nutmeg, bufotenine
