Prodromal symptoms of psychosis
  • Suspiciousness
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Restlessness
  • Change in appetite
  • Sense of alteration of self, others or the outside world
  • Social isolation or withdrawal
  • Marked impairment in role functioning
  • Markedly peculiar behaviour
  • Marked impairment in personal hygiene
  • Blunted, flat or inappropriate affect
  • Digressive, vague or metaphoric speech
  • Odd or bizarre ideation
  • Unusual perceptual experiences
  • Marked lack of initiative, interests or energy
Many of these symptoms are non-specific, but incipient psychosis is suggested by:
  • Marked, unexplained and consistent changes in behaviour
  • A pattern of increasing severity
  • Clustering of symptoms
  • Family history of psychosis
