Principal recommendations of the NHMRC Report on Passive Smoking
Governments should adopt and enforce regulations:-
to make all indoor public and working environments free of tobacco smoke;
- to restrict smoking in outdoor public places such as sports stadiums;
- to make shared indoor areas of institutional and custodial facilities smoke-free (with any dormitory areas occupied by smokers not to be shared with non-smokers and to be provided with separate ventilation systems);
- to prohibit exposure of children attending family day care schemes to environmental tobacco smoke; and
- to ensure that the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000 is smoke free.
Governments should also consider legislation to prohibit smoking in private vehicles when children are passengers.
