1: Safety regulations for motorised personal watercraft (MPWCs)
All people driving a mechanically driven boat at a speed of more than
10 kt must be in possession of a current recreational boat driver's
licence.
All MPWCs must be registered. The registration number must be
clearly visible when the craft is under way and displayed in figures of
at least 100 mm height. 2
The specified minimum distance that an MPWC rider must keep between
him- or herself and a person in the water, another vessel, pile or
structure, jetty, landing stage, pontoon, mooring, pump, riverbank
or shore is 30 m. While in a designated surf zone, indicated by patrol
flags or signs, this distance is 100 m. 2
All MPWC riders and passengers must wear a personal flotation device
type 2 or 3 (Australian Standard [AS] 1499 or 2260, respectively) in
closed waters, and type 1 (AS 1512) in open waters. 3 Type 1 has 50% greater buoyancy than
type 2 or 3.
