Goanna oil

Khimseng Tew
Radiology Registrar
John Hunter Hospital, Newcastle, NSW

MJA 2001; 175: 586

The medicinal properties of goanna oil have long been known to Aboriginal people. This x-ray shows the abdomen of a man with chronic pancreatitis, and who was self-administering "alternative medication". The shape of the calcification (arrow) in the region of the pancreatic head makes one wonder if this "alternative medication" might have been goanna oil?
