Christmas Competition

A Sentimental Christmas

MJA 1999; 171: 687

For some reason, this year's Christmas competition brought the Pollyanna romantics among you out of the woodwork. Gone are the gory stories and improbable foreign bodies of previous years. In their place this year are smiles and hearts (albeit in bizarre places), and tales of fishing and blissful domesticity!

Unfortunately this gentle spirit didn't affect the cut-throat atmosphere here at the MJA editorial office during the secret ballot for the winning entries. The usual strict scrutineering was required to ensure certain people stuck to their designated voting rights (one for the best image and one for the best written entry).

In the "image" section, the winner was unquestioned: Simon So, with his entry "Abdominal pain... cause?". The x-ray in question may not have made a diagnosis, but it has excellent entertainment value, which, after all, is a good secondary gain in any situation. Even more enjoyable will be the two bottles of Australian champagne which Dr So receives as his prize.

In the "written" section Gary Walter pipped the other favourite, Douglas Gow, by a whisker (no, Dr Gow, not a whisky) for his description of the as yet untested "New occasional instrument for measuring marital quality". His champagne should go well with his wife's smoked salmon bagels.

Many thanks to all our contributors. We have been delighted, amazed and sometimes moved by your efforts. However, there's no time to relax. You only have ten months until the deadline for next year's Christmas issue.
