Dying with dignity in neurodegenerative disorders. Peter K Panegyres, editor. Perth: Neurosciences Unit, Department of Health, 2008 (xi + 168 pp). ISBN 978 0 646 49037 3.

Neurodegenerative disorders usually account for a small yet significant number of patients on a palliative care program. Time spent in palliative care is also usually only a small fraction of the patients’ journey from diagnosis until death. This book is a collation of talks given at a symposium in 2006 in Western Australia on the topic of “Dying with dignity in neurodegenerative disorders”. It explores the topic from a clinical, ethical, legal and patient-centred framework, bringing with it a broad perspective.

It is a strength of this book that the articles are diverse. It was great to see chapters in which patients with dementia and carers are able to present their perspectives. Proceeds from the book are used for research into neurodegenerative disorders in young adults.

Dying with dignity also explores proposed legislation in WA on advance care planning, so much of what is written will only appeal to WA readers. Still, there is sufficient other material to increase knowledge among a broader audience of readers interested in neurodegenerative disorders.
