A colour handbook of dermatology. RJG Rycroft, SJ Robertson. London: Manson Publishing 1999 (vii + 220pp). ISBN 1874545251.

Dermatology is the classical clinical discipline. There are very few scientific or laboratory investigations available, or even required, in assessing the diagnosis in a patient prior to deciding management of their condition. Richard Rycroft, a consultant dermatologist at St John's Institute for Dermatology for over 20 years, and Stuart Robinson, the clinical photographer/illustrator there, have combined their clinical and imaging skills to create a small book that concentrates on the clinical diagnosis of cutaneous conditions. As one would expect, the standard of the illustrations and photography are of the highest order. Stuart Robinson has over 25 years' experience in this area.

The clinical description of each of the conditions, their epidemiology, and the special points for each of them are clearly written and easily extracted. The book is a diagnostic tool and does not attempt to cover management of the conditions.

The authors aimed to provide a diagnostic aid to medical graduates — ranging from those about to start dermatological training to, particularly, general practitioners. It certainly covers the conditions that are likely to be seen in general practice and many more.

In summary, this book is a topical and well-presented, easy to use aid to diagnosis of all of the skin conditions that would be seen in the average practice in Australia.
