An X-ray retrospective

Australian radiology

Australasian radiology - a history. James Ryan, Keith Sutton and Malcolm Baigent. Sydney: McGraw-Hill 1996 (xviii + 524pp.). ISBN: 0 07 407207 6.

The writing of this book was instigated by one of its authors, James Ryan, as a celebration of one hundred years of organ imaging in Australia and New Zealand. Ryan and his co-authors have painstakingly researched the people and events covered in this lengthy work. The stories of the individuals and institutions involved are related in an eminently readable and sometimes whimsical and amusing way. Much of the book relates to events in the late 19th century and first half of the 20th century. Unfortunately, radiologists who have made valuable academic or political contributions to radiology in Australia or New Zealand since that time are not discussed.

This book will mainly be of interest to radiologists, radiotherapists and radiographers, who may have at least some knowledge of the characters who populate its pages. It represents a skillful collation of a huge amount of information gleaned from many sources and will stand as a valuable contribution to the archives of the Royal Australasian College of Radiologists.
