Our children's well being has a key influence on the success of future generations. The aim of any health professional or parent should be to encourage sensible nutritional and physical activity practices throughout childhood as well as in later life. Recently, there has been concern that children today may have a lifestyle which places them at an increased risk of developing diseases such as obesity, cardiovascular disease and diabetes in later life. Strategies for optimising health in children should promote sound dietary practices and physical activity to help prevent this outcome.

This supplement attempts to answer some of the questions frequently asked by medical practitioners and health professionals about nutrition and physical activity in primary school children. A panel of experts working in paediatric health have contributed to the supplement, and to the development of recommendations which will assist healthcare practitioners in managing and treating problems related to nutrition and fitness.
