A colour atlas of medical parasitology. CD-ROM pathology edition and CD-ROM student edition (biomedical edition). Robin A Cooke and Brian Stewart. Knowledge Books and Software 1999 (382 images each disc). ISBN 1 875219-68-4. |
These CD-ROMS, compiled by a medical pathologist and a medical photographer, are divided into sections on protozoa, nematodes, cestodes and trematodes and are well indexed and easy to navigate. The student edition is aimed at high-school-level students and features parasite life cycles and simplified clinical details, whereas the pathology edition concentrates on case studies. While pathologists and physicians may find the text lacking in detail and anecdotal in parts, the illustrations, which have an emphasis on histopathological sections, are of excellent quality. Furthermore, copies of all images are available for purchase as slides or computer graphics, making this atlas a useful teaching aid.

A high power view of the faeces in the lumen of a transverse section of appendix. There are two Ascaris eggs and two Trichuris eggs in this microscope field.
An opened small intestine of a six-year-old boy from Papua New Guinea. The child had "pig bel" (enteritis necroticans). The adult Ascaris worms present in the intestine were incidental findings. Of interest is the added presence of an adult hookworm towards the left end of the specimen.
